From the forming of the swiss style in the 1950s. De Stijl , Russian Constructivism , Bauhaus and the new typography. The characteristics of this new international style were:

• Asymmetrical organisation of the design elements
• Mathematically constructed grid 10 , most legible, alignment and proximity
• Objective photography and copy
• Sans serif typography , showing a more expressive age.
• Flush-left/Ragged-right

Personal expression and eccentric solutions were rejected when a more universal while a more scientific approach to design problems and problem solving was embraced.

Jan Tschichold

Really follows bold rules , positive use of negative space , asymmetry and san serif lettering. He also designed the Penguin books cover which is a very traditional style of typography.

New Typefaces

In the 1950s there was an introduction of 2 new type faces. Neue Haas Grotesk and Helvetica. 1957 Release.

Focusing on legibility wide spread availability , was the sans serif face of choice for designers and typographers for the next decades.
