Managing Project

I first started by breaking the Project Down by creating segments about my essay. These would change throughout but would set me up with a good starting idea.

Introduction

Wolfgang Weingart was an internationally known German Graphic Designer and Typographer from the 40s. He was considered ‘The Father’ of New Wave typography who brought a new experimental approach to the field. His work is compared with the work of the Bauhaus. His work was characterised by its use of strong geometric shapes, abstraction and bold colours which comes directly from the Swiss Style which he was very much involved with and adding his own experimental features to this style to create his own that didn't follow a set guideline. His work and legacy helped shape the New Wave typography movement and continues to impact designs today with his idea of pushing boundaries on what was possible with Design and Type.

Early Life and Career

Weingart was Born in southern Germany near Lake Constance in early 1941, he spent his childhood in Germany , briefly moving to Lisbon in 1954 but then returning where he would then go to study applied graphic arts at the Merz Academy in Stuttgart in 1958 where he developed skills including linocut and typesetting. He then followed to go onto a three year typesetting apprenticeship where he met Karl August Hanke who became his mentor. Weingart met Swiss typographers Emil Ruder and Armin Hoffman in 1963 in Basel which from encouragement from Karl August he moved and went to study there a year later at the Schule für Gestaltung Basel ( Basel school of design) where In 1968 Weingart was asked by Armin Hoffman to teach typography at the school where they had a newly developed department, the Weiterbildungsklasse für Grafik. Weingart was recognized for being a highly inspiring teacher. He accepted a teaching position at the Yale Summer Program in Graphic Design in Brissago, Switzerland, when asked by Armin Hoffman. Following the end of Weingarts studies he was allowed to remain at the school for his own independent work and projects by Armin Hoffman and given extended access to its type shop by Emil Ruder. This space led to Weingarts Most renowned work which was a series of covers for Typografische Monatsblätter between 1972 and 73. This skyrocketed the status of Weingart and he then soon set out on a US tour which further spread his notability and led to many years of tours to the US and worldwide. He also spent over 40 years teaching across the world in all of Europe , Asia , North and South America , Japan , Australia and New Zealand.

Weingart later said "I took 'Swiss Typography' as my starting point, but then I blew it apart, never forcing any style upon my students. I never intended to create a 'style'. It just happened that the students picked up—and misinterpreted—a so-called 'Weingart style' and spread it around."
